It all started with Bonnie's idea of gathering a group of students from a particular high school in Hong Kong to sing some Christmas carols; soon it turned into a group with 10 people, all Hong Kong students from various walks of musical life. We had our very first concert in Rm 1321 Humanities, which is a band rehearsal room. The concert was fun-filled with singing and violin playing, and a surprising black-out certainly added to the experience.
After this first performance, we accumulated to a force of about 12 in the Spring. Not only were there students from Hong Kong, but also from India. Being a newly formed group we did not have a great idea yet of organizing performances, and we only sang in Hong Kong Student Association's "Show Siu Siu". And we still had not a name.
Time went by, we became more organized and ambitious. Last fall we had just about 20 members, and gave the very first concert of our own in Rm 240 Union South. We also finally decided on a name, coming from Greek mythology. Muse was one of the nine daughters of Zeus; being the godess of art, she sang in a lot of classic Greek literature. Echo was a mortal whom Zeus liked, who had the most beautiful voice among humans; Zeus' wife, Juno, out of jealousy, put a curse on her such that she could only repeat the last word of others. Our name, Museko thus comes from "Muse" + "Echo".
Toward the future, Museko will be bringing yet more music of various ethnic backgrounds to the Madison area, and providing a great opportunity for people who love the art of singing, and enjoy a good company of other singers.
